Cards for the Little Missy
When I was a kid, I read a lot of comic books. I especially liked the Legion of Super-Heroes. The Legion was this loose group of teenaged superheroes from all over the galaxy who gathered together to fight interplanetary evil. I think the stories were all set in the year 3000 or something like that. The leader of the Legion was Superboy. (No, I don't remember how he managed to remain a teenager until the year 3000 but it had something to do with alternate dimensions or some shit like that). ANYWAY, all the other Legionnaires had pretty silly, hyperspecific powers. Lightening Lad could throw bolts of you-know-what; Brainiac 5 was a super smarty-pants; Matter-Eater Lad could eat literally anything. But it was the gal Legionnaires who had the really silly powers. Princess Projecta's power was her ability to cast realistic illusions in front of people and get them all disoriented. Shrinking Violet (good name) could make herself small. Phantom Girl could walk through stuff. Dream Girl could see the future in her dreams. Dawnstar could find things. Saturn Girl could read minds. And all these gals had the sexiest, most ridiculous, least physically possible uniforms ever, and the different artists who worked on this comic book seemed to be in a contest to see who could cantilever the most breast tissue encased in the smallest amount of fabric on top of the narrowest waist. Since few super-hero situations actually call for realistic illusions or superior navigation abilities, the guys who wrote the comics would find dumb little housekeeping things for the gals to do while the boys brought down whatever intergalactic menace was threatening Planet Xardox in that particular issue. Like maybe someone would need Violet to go inside a keyhole to open a lock. But mostly, the gals just flew around looking super-sexy and stating the obvious. But that was (gulp) thirty years ago. I wonder if Misses Phantom, Saturn, Dream, et al. have broken through the comic book ceiling or if they're still just glorified, flying strippers. |
